Changes to SchoolCam in Response to New Google Policy

Google has recently updated its policies to enhance user security and privacy. One significant change is that third-party apps can no longer request access to an entire Google Drive account. Instead, apps must now request access to specific folders chosen by the user.

To comply with this new policy and ensure the continued security of your data, we have made the following changes to the SchoolCam app:

New Folder Selection Flow: When you need to upload or access files from Google Drive, you will now be prompted to manually select the specific folders you wish the app to access. This means an extra step in the user flow when choosing a folder, but it will significantly enhance the security of your data. This is how the new screen to select a destination folder looks like:

The “Pick a folder” button will allow you to select any folder in your Google Drive using the Google provided picker instead of our own built-in picker.

Why This Change?

We understand that adding an extra step to your workflow may be inconvenient. However, we want to emphasize that this change is driven by our commitment to your security and our compliance with Google’s policies. Here are a few key reasons why this change is essential:

Enhanced Security: By limiting access to only the folders you choose, we reduce the risk of unauthorized access to your entire Google Drive. This makes your data more secure.

Policy Compliance: Adhering to Google’s updated policies ensures that SchoolCam remains a trusted and approved app within the Google ecosystem.

User Privacy: With more granular control over which folders are accessible, you have greater privacy and control over your personal and professional data.
